Norfolk broads history

The large lakes or broads were formed by flooding following peat extraction. These are accessed by a system of navigable rivers including in the northern section the Bure, Thurne and Ant.

Away from the towns and villages the Broads offer close access to nature and wildlife. In high season the busy waterways are more a convoy of boats, especially between the main hire points for day boats. The large open Broads offer sailing versus motor cruising and the ability to moor.

The Broads are not very commercial, most restaurants offer traditional pub fare. An exception is the Galley Deli at Horning offering a full gastro - deli counter and a small in shop tea room. They produce there own home baked cakes. Well worth a visit.
