Why Hollyhocks?

Hollyhocks (Alcea rosea) have been a favourite of cottage gardeners for centuries, and it’s easy to see why. These biennial plants produce stunning spikes of flowers that can reach up to 8 feet tall, making them perfect for adding height and drama to your garden. Their flowers come in a variety of colors, from deep reds and pinks to creamy whites and yellows, ensuring there’s a shade to complement any garden palette.

But hollyhocks are more than just beautiful; they’re also incredibly resilient. Once established, they can thrive in a range of conditions, tolerating both drought and poor soil. This makes them ideal for both novice and experienced gardeners alike. Plus, hollyhocks are beloved by pollinators, attracting bees and butterflies, which are essential for a healthy, thriving garden.

Tips for Growing Hollyhocks

To help you make the most of your free hollyhock seeds, here are a few tips for growing hollyhocks from seed:

  • Planting: Hollyhock seeds can be sown directly onto the ground either in autumn (as nature does) or in spring or early summer. Choose a sunny spot with well-drained soil for best results. They will also tolerate partial shade. Hollyhock seeds can be sown on the surface or lightly covered with a thin layer of soil or compost (about ¼ inch or 6mm). They don’t need to be deeply buried. If sowing in autumn we find that it is best to sow them where you want them to grow and just scatter the seeds on the surface. The seeds have a hard outer coating which benefits from being frosted. We have found doing this greatly increases the germination rate the following year, so much so that sometimes we leave entire heads of hollyhocks to be frosted in this way.
  • Soil typeThe soil should be well-draining for holyhocks to thrive. If your soil is heavy or clay-like, consider mixing in some compost or sand to improve drainage or picking an alternative position in your garden. Hollyhocks love gravel and will be at their happiest in a poor gritty soil in full sun. In Blakeney you often see them growing out of crevices at the side of the road where most other plants would be unable to grow.
  • Watering: If sowing in late spring or early summer keep the soil moist until the seeds germinate, . If you sow in autumn they will usually not germinate until the following year. Once established, hollyhocks are fairly drought-tolerant, but regular watering will encourage lush growth, particularly when they are young.
  • Support: As hollyhocks grow tall, they may need some support, especially in windy areas. Staking the plants or growing them against a fence or a wall can help keep them upright.
  • Spacing: As the hollyhock seedlings grow, you may need to thin them out to prevent overcrowding. Aim for about 18 to 24 inches (45 to 60 cm) between plants to give them room to develop fully.
  • Companion plantings: Hollyhocks do not like competition particularly when they are young, and we find they do not thrive well in a mixed herbaceous border where they would be overwhelmed. Hollyhocks are best grown in poor soil where other plants will not thrive, and grow well with other wild flowers such as valerian or oxeyes daises.
  • Pest Control: Hollyhocks can be susceptible to rust, a fungal disease that appears as orange spots on the leaves. To reduce rust on your hollyhocks, avoid overhead watering and remove any affected leaves promptly.

Can you just scatter hollyhock seeds?

Yes, you can scatter hollyhock seeds directly in your garden, and in many cases, this is the simplest and most effective way to grow them. By scattering hollyhock seeds, you can create a natural, cottage-garden look with minimal effort. Just be patient as these stunning flowers take time to establish and bloom.

What to Expect after you've sown your hollyhock seeds

  • First Year: In their first year, hollyhocks typically focus on growing leaves and developing a strong root system. You might not see flowers until the second year.
  • Second Year and beyond: The following year, they will produce tall spikes covered in beautiful, vibrant flowers. Hollyhocks often reseed themselves, so you may find new plants sprouting up the next year without any extra effort on your part.

With a little care and attention, your hollyhocks will reward you with a stunning display of flowers that will make your garden the envy of the neighborhood.
